Setup GitHub

  1. Create a GitHub account: link
    Use your Kenyon Email.
  2. Install gitHub on you computer: link
    It’s on most MAC’s already
  3. Create a SSH key pair:
    MacOS: link
    a. Open a new Terminal window
    b. Type “ssh-keygen -b 4096 -t rsa“
    c. Enter return for all prompts

    Windows 10 or 11: link
    a. Open Windows Command Prompt
    b. Type “ssh-keygen -b 4096 -t rsa“
    c. Enter return for all prompts
  4. Add you ssh public key to GitHub
    a. go to settings.
    b. Go to “SSH and GPG keys”
    c. On your terminal go to directory ~/.ssh
    d. List out the contents of “id_rsa.pub” (your public key).
    e. Click on green “New SSH Key” button on GitHub
    f. Copy your public key, and paste into “Key” field”. For “Title” put in your computer description.
    g. Click green “Add SSH Key button”.
    h. Add my public key as well:

  5. Create a new project on GitHub
    a. Click the green new button
    b. Give the project a name and a description
    c. Set yourself as the owner
    d. Do not click the checkbox to “Add a README file”
    e. Click the green “Create Repository”
    f. go onto your computer termal, create a new directory, enter it
    g. Paste in the code under “…or create a new repository on the command line”
    h. Create some files.
    i. Commit
    j. push
    k. See the files on GitHub.
  6. Send me your github Project URL:
    a. Open your project
    b. Copy the URL (Like “https://github.com/jimskon/wificontroller”)
    c. Send to me.
