Turn in before class: Moodle
Objective:
Understand, analyze, and critically evaluate dark UX patterns through research, case analysis, and comparison with AI-generated insights.
Instructions
Step 1: Research UX Dark Patterns
Spend some time reading about UX dark patterns using the website https://www.deceptive.design/ and/or other reputable sources online. You may also ask an AI tool (e.g., ChatGPT) to explain what UX dark patterns are and summarize the types.
Write a brief (~200 words) summary explaining:
- What are UX dark patterns?
- Why are they considered unethical or problematic?
- At least three common types of dark patterns with examples.
Step 2: Choose a Case Example
Browse the cases, wall of shame or explore real-life UX experiences (from websites, apps, or services you use). Select one dark pattern that you find interesting or personally relevant.
In 1–2 paragraphs, describe:
- The product or service where you saw this dark pattern
- What the dark pattern is and how it operates
- How it might affect users (emotionally, financially, or behaviorally)
Screenshots or visual examples are encouraged (if possible).
Step 3: Your Critical Analysis
Write a critical analysis (~300–400 words) of the case example you chose. Address:
- What the company’s intention might be behind the design
- How this pattern impacts user trust, decision-making, or consent
- Whether this could (or should) be regulated
- How the design could be improved ethically while still meeting business goals
Step 4: Ask the AI
Use an AI tool (such as ChatGPT) to analyze the same case. Prompt it with a clear and neutral description of the case, and ask for its analysis of the ethics and impact of the dark pattern.
Paste the AI’s full response into your assignment or attach it as an appendix.
Step 5: Reflection – Human vs. AI
Write a final reflection (~200–300 words) comparing your analysis with the AI’s. Consider:
- What did the AI notice that you didn’t?
- What did you understand better from a human perspective?
- Was the AI’s analysis too neutral, too critical, or just right?
- How can combining human insight and AI tools enhance ethical design thinking?
Deliverables
Submit a single document containing:
- Your dark pattern research summary
- Your selected example and description
- Your critical analysis
- The AI-generated analysis (or linked/attached appendix)
- Your final reflection
Grading Criteria:
- Clarity and depth of research (15%)
- Relevance and detail of the selected case (15%)
- Critical thinking and ethical insight in analysis (30%)
- Quality of comparison and reflection with AI (25%)
- Writing quality and organization (15%)
